Alexandria Board and Commission Vacancies

We talked about getting more involved with the Alexandria community, and look at all of the ways you can! Here is a list of some boards and committees with vacant positions:

The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the following vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions and committees.  Council will act on these vacancies at the April 27, 2010 City Council meeting.  All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record Form and return it to the City Clerk’s Office or file the form electronically via the City’s website no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010. Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council.


Affordable Housing Advisory Committee – Two vacancies as follows:  one for a representative of an employer in the City who employees at least 100 people; and one for a landlord of residential property in the City, both due to resignations.  The Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Committee members.  Committee members also serve on the Housing Master Plan Advisory Group, which meets at 7:00 p.m. following the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee meetings.

Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force – three vacancies:  one for a representative of the Interfaith Community due to an administrative action; one for a representative of middle schools, due to an administrative action; and one Latino community representative, due to an administrative action.  The Task Force meets at the call of the chair.

Alexandria-Gyumri Sister City Committee – seven vacancies for citizen positions – five are due to resignations, one is due to an administrative action and one is due to an expiring term.  The Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month.  Approximately three hours per month are required of committee members.

Alexandria Transportation Commission – one position for a Traffic and Parking Board representative, due to an expiring term.  The Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.  Approximately two hours per month are required of Commission members.

Commission for the Arts – four vacancies:  one member who represents the public at
large as an art consumer and participant, due to an expiring term; and three members who
represent arts education or business expertise relative to arts and cultural development,
including marketing, financing/funding, tourism promotion and organizational
development, all due to expiring terms.  The Commission meets on the third Tuesday of
the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately nine hours per month are required of Commission
members.

Commission on Employment – two vacancies: one employment services representative due to an administrative action; and one business representative due to a resignation.  The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m.  Approximately five
hours per month are required of Commission members.

Commission on HIV/AIDS – four vacancies:  one AGLCA member and one Red Cross
member, both due to resignations; one hospice of Northern Virginia/Capital Hospice
representative, due to an administrative action; and one Commission for Women
representative, due to a resignation.  The Commission meets on the third Monday of the
month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately three hours per month are required of Commission
members.

Commission on Information Technology – one vacancy for a representative of an
institution of higher education, due to an administrative action.  The Commission meets
bi-monthly on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately two hours
per meeting are required of Commission members.

Community Services Board – two vacancies:  one for a consumer member who is
currently receiving services, and one licensed physician representative, both due to
resignations.  The Commission meets on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
Approximately eight hours per month are required of Commission members.

Convention and Visitors Association Board of Governors – two vacancies, both due to resignations:  one hotel owner/manager representative and one national or international
trade or professional association executive.  The Board meets on the third Monday of
each month.  Approximately three hours per month is required of Board members.

Early Childhood Commission – two vacancies as follows:  one representative from the
Alexandria Chapter of the Northern Virginia Family Day Care Association due to an
expired term; and one member of the Alexandria Economic Opportunities Commission
due to Council action.  The Commission meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:00
p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Commission members.

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – five vacancies as follows:
one member of a veterans organization due to the resignation of Kristin Himes Holland;
one member nominated by Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society; one member nominated
by the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations; one member who attends high school
in the City of Alexandria, all due to resignations; one member from the Alexandria
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, due to an expiring term.  The
Committee meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately two
hours per month are required of Committee members.

Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – four vacancies:  one representative from the Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage due to the resignation of Charles Nelson; one representative from Landmarks Society/Stabler Leadbeater due to an expired term; one Planning District III representative due to a resignation; and one
Archaeology Commission representative, due to an expiring term.  The Commission
meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately two hours per
month are required of Commission members.

Human Rights Commission – three vacancies:  one for a representative from the
Alexandria Economic Opportunities Commission due to an administrative action; and
two citizen members, due to expiring terms.  The Commission meets on the third
Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately five hours per month are required of
Commission members.

Local Emergency Planning Commission – two vacancies as follows:  one member
representing the broadcast or print media due to a resignation, and one member
representing a facility subject to federal emergency planning requirements of SARA, due
to the resignation of Michael Stumpf.  The Committee meets quarterly at the call of the
Chair.  Approximately two hours per meeting are required of Committee members.

Park and Recreation Commission – one vacancy for a high school youth member due
to a resignation.  The Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
Approximately eight hours per month are required of Commission members.

Public Health Advisory Commission – One vacancy for a representative of Inova
Alexandria Hospital, nominated by the hospital, due to an expiring term.  The
Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m.  Approximately four
hours per month are required of Commission members.

Public Records Advisory Commission – two vacancies for citizen members due to
expired terms.  The Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
Approximately two hours per month are required of Commission members.

Real Estate Assessment Review Board – two vacancies for citizen members, due to an administrative action.  (These two appointments will be made in June.)  The Board meets
three times a week from June through December at the call of the chair.

Sister Cities Committee – one vacancy for a representative of the Alexandria-Gyumri
Sister City committee, due to a resignation.  The Committee meets on the fourth Monday
of the month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately six hours per meeting are required of
committee members.

Traffic and Parking Board – three vacancies for citizen members, all due to expiring
terms.  The Board meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
Approximately five hours per month are required of Board members.

USS Alexandria Liaison Committee – two vacancies as follows:  one for a
representative from the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations, due to a resignation;
and one citizen at large, due to an expiring term.  The Committee meets at the call of the
Chair.

All applicants must comply with City ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee
shall resident outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency waiver is granted, and
City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies
on boards, committee or commissions that relate to the responsibilities of the department
in which they are employed.
