Our Goals: To further the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party, to promote the election of the party’s candidates for public office at all levels, to encourage the involvement of young people in civic and political affairs, and to promote harmony and fellowship with one another

We are a chartered club of Virginia Young Democrats and affiliated with the Alexandria Democratic Committee

A Brief History of the Alexandria Young Democrats

The City of Alexandria has a long, proud history. Founded in 1749, Alexandria is almost 50 years older than our nation’s capital and has produced a long line of local and national leaders. Alexandria’s most well known citizen, George Washington, was not only the United State’s first President, but also served as a Trustee of Alexandria. For Democrats across the Commonwealth, Alexandria is viewed as a bastion of responsible leadership and progressive ideals.

The citizens of Alexandria hold their elected officials accountable for providing an effective government. After all, almost 55% of Alexandria residents hold a college degree, which places Alexandria in the top 10 most educated jurisdictions in the nation. With its close proximity to Washington, D.C., it is safe to say that Alexandrians ‘know government’. In 2003, voters sent a clear message across Alexandria that the Democratic platform was as strong as ever, electing all Democrats on the ballot into office. This included the entire City Council slate, and Bill Euille as mayor, who made history by becoming the city’s first African-American mayor. After three years in office, the voters returned to their voting booths in 2006 and, once again, elected an all-Democratic contingent into office. Simply put, amidst all the bickering, grandstanding, and ineffective leadership that has been on display by our current Administration over the past years, Alexandrians have become keenly aware of the importance of recognizing efficient and honest government.

Over the past few years, a group of young professionals has worked hard to ensure that Democratic principles are on display throughout the Alexandria community. Initially coming together to help elect Democrats in the celebrated elections of 2003, this group of like minded individuals decided to stay together and form the Alexandria Young Democrats. Wanting to maintain a Democratic presence, whether it is an election year or not, the Alexandria Young Democrats have grown from a handful of activists to a large body of enthusiastic Democrats. The mission of the Alexandria Young Democrats is to support the ideals of the Democratic Party. To that end, the Alexandria Young Democrats participate in community volunteer events, perform acts of philanthropy for city groups, mobilize and elect Democrats during election time, and provide a healthy social environment for its members throughout the year by hosting regular club gatherings. True to the Democratic spirit, we welcome all interested parties to join our ranks. While our official membership is open to individuals 13 to 39, we welcome anyone who considers themselves ‘young at heart’.
